Any other expectant moms have this?

admin on February 15th, 2010

I am 38 wks pregnant with my second child. I have Carpal Tunnel Syndrome that is extremely painful.I had it with my first baby and it resolved about 8 wks postpartum. But, this time around, it is so painful, it wakes me up in the middle of the night ( despite taking 10mg of Ambien). I am doing everything right to lessen the severity of pain and swelling but it is EXTREMELY painful. I can’t cut food for my son, open jars, write out checks, etc. without unbelievable pain. I am nurse so I know it’s very common in pregnancy and that treatment during such time is limited. I just wanted to know if anyone else has had it be this severe. ( yes, my OB knows but there isn’t alot that can be done that I am not doing so I don’t need treatment advice) I am just curious if any other women felt the pain this much. I just had numbness and mild pain with it during my first pregnancy.

JUST THE USUAL TINGKING IN THE HANDS. NOTHING THAT BAD.

I have had carpal tunnel syndrome before getting pregnant and had scheduled surgery to get it fixed. Recently I found out I am pregnant (the carpal tunnel was not caused or related to my pregnancy) I am in my first trimester and want to know if its okay to go through with the surgery and will or can it cause harm to my baby?

Since it is not a matter of life or death, you should postpone it just to be on the safe side. It probably wouldn’t hurt the baby, but there is always a chance of side effects from the drugs.

I read about Carpal Tunnel, my symptoms seem to be the opposite. I have pins and needles in the pinky, top of hand on the same side of the pinyk. Top of forearm and I tend to do things like typing or texting with my wrist bending downwards, not bent upwards.

There are many causes of rist pain. I have included some information below that should be of help to you.

Wrist pain can be due to any one of a number of causes, including carpal tunnel syndrome, a broken bone, a sprain or strain, tendonitis or bursitis. Close to nine percent of all athletic injuries may be injuries to the hand of wrist. Throwing, weight-bearing, twisting and impacts are the four main types of ways wrists can become injured. Weakened ligaments are another common cause chronic wrist pain, and may also make an individual more susceptible to injuires.

How does wrist pain develop?
The wrist is made up of 15 bones and 27 articular surfaces, that is, surfaces related to a joint, all in a sea of ligaments. Stability of the wrist is provided by the tight-fitting anatomic design of the individual carpal bones and by the ligamentous interconnections that control movement of one bone on another. When weakened ligaments allow one of the wrist bones to become unstable and shift positions, carpal instability results. In addition, any one of the ligaments may be torn due to an injury and become a source of pain. If the ligamentous injury is incomplete, the bones can assume a normal alignment at rest, but collapse under applied load. This is termed dynamic instability of the wrist. Static carpal instability occurs when enough restraints are lost that the bones assume an abnormal alignment.

What are the symptoms of wrist pain?
Common symptoms of wrist pain can include an aching, burning, numbness or tingling in the palm, wrist, thumb or fingers. The thumb muscle may become weak, making it difficult to grasp things. Pain may also extend up to your elbow. Bruising and swelling may be present if the pain is the result of an injury. Athletes who have experienced incomplete ligament tears or sprains may have no wrist pain at rest, but will experience pain during activity.

Conventional medical treatments may help relieve the symptoms of wrist pain, but they do not address the root of the problem. By strengthening structural weaknesses in the body, wrist pain may be alleviated permanently.

okay im only 13 and here is what i looked up

–>> One of the first symptoms of carpal tunnel syndrome is gradual numbness in the areas supplied by the median nerve. This is quickly followed by pain where the nerve gives sensation in the hand. The hand may begin to feel like it’s "asleep," especially in the early morning hours after a night’s sleep.

Pain may spread up the arm to the shoulder and even to the side of the neck. If the condition progresses, the thenar muscles of the thumb can start to weaken and atrophy, causing the hand to be clumsy when picking up a glass or cup. If the pressure keeps building in the hand, the thenar muscles may begin to shrink (atrophy).

Touching the pad of the thumb to the tips of the other fingers becomes difficult, making it hard to grasp items such as a steering wheel, newspaper, or telephone.

okay, that is what i feel like. i dont feel any pins or needles or any wrist pain. i feel liek this weird idk how to explain it, but liek wierd sensation idk weak? IDK its liek i cant hold anything heavy or naything idk!!!! the tip of my Rh thumb is numb?

admin on February 14th, 2010

My Dr. ignores it when i tell him . Is this carpal tunnel syndrome ?
It’s been like this for about a year. Is there any treatment ?
the numbness in my thumb is work related. I just wondered if anything can be done about it.I guess not .

are you serious? He ignores. Maybe he does not think it is that serious. Maybe you do have carpal tunnel syndrome if it has been like that for over a year.

Here’s some info i found:
Initial treatment generally involves resting the affected hand and wrist for at least 2 weeks, avoiding activities that may worsen symptoms, and immobilizing the wrist in a splint to avoid further damage from twisting or bending. If there is inflammation, applying cool packs can help reduce swelling.
